Any government no matter how good and virtuous it appears can not be trusted. Greed corrupts even the most honest of people. This is why we have the Second Amendment, to protect freedom and have the ability to fight an oppressive government.

As for phone tapping, I have no problem with it. I have nothing to hide or be ashamed of. So if listening in on my phone calls could prevent just one terrorist attack, then I would fully support it.

After all the police is part of the government. You have to trust them in a sense...

I don't care about the tappings. Nothing I say will be written down and released in a book of funny sayings and no one will start telling others about him (If I ever was tapped). Overall I think my life is more valueable than privacy (we dont lose freedoms, just privacy).

Government ... unfortunately is a massive bureaucracy , and as large grouping of people they will have all kinds of personal agendas ..
I don't believe there are to many people that act similar to a movie plot , every one for the most part feel they are doing a service , but you can never satisfy every one .. The government feels in it's bureaucracy to keep wire tapping's etc. to protect us , in reality if you keep your nose clean ,and don't interfere with the proses, you will be safe , if they suspect you ,your best bet is don't run , and help them out to solve their problem, they are just too powerful , you will come ahead .

Depends.... they were already doing it to catch drug dealers. And the phone taps that every one was crying about were on calls comming from known terrorist outside the country to persons inside the country. And, yes, I think they should be able to do that. I don't want another 9-11 or worse to happen again.

If someone wants to listen to my boring conversations, let them, who cares. I have nothing to hide, I love this country, I don't owe anyone any money, I haven't gotten any ones daughter pregnant, I haven't committed any crimes, etc. etc. Keeping this country safe along with the rest of the free world is a very hard but necessary job so if it helps to listen in to our phone calls then I'm all for it.

Yes.

For law enforcement purposes, I think they should be required to get a warrant issued by a court.

But for national security, they should be entitled to monitor international (originating from or sent to a foreign country) communications without getting warrants, however there should be some periodic oversight to make sure it is not abused.

If your family was taken hostage and the only way to find them was with a wire tap?

Would it be ok with you then?

Absolutely. I would tap into suspected terrorist phone lines too, if I had the technology.
