I was thinking of buying a new computer and I was wondering which kind of computer should I buy? a Dell or a Compaq. I asked someone who knew about computers and I asked him about a Dell and he laughed and said dont talk about Dells and then he smiled. I asked him what was wrong with it and he just smiled and said nothing. Which computer should I buy a Compaq or a Dell, thanks for the help.

I've been buying PC's since 1987 and have had quite a few.

The best way is to have a PC built or build one yourself so you know exactly what you have and can specify every detail.

That said: We currently have 4 Dells in the family: 2 desktops and 2 laptops. So far they have been excellent but all are used for general computing and not for game play. That should be a consideration also. If you want to play games, no matter what you buy, you'll have to spend some extra money for a better CPU and more RAM.

What might be a worthwhile investment of $5 is to go to http://www.consumerreports.org and sign up for a month and review all the major manufacturers of PC's and see how they are rated by the public and the CR Tech Staff.

After all what you are going to get here on Y Answers is a lot of opinion and very little fact.

Hope this helps.

I say Apple because they're not PCs...so they actually work. But if you just HAVE to go with Dell or Compaq, then I have to say Compaq. As much as I want a Mac, a Compaq is what I'm using now. This is about the only PC in my house I like and just to let you know get the Preserio 2100 laptop by Compaq...may not be the latest Compaq but that what I'm using and it's the best PC I've used and there aren't any custom parts.

Go for the Compaq! I think they're usually better. Dell's are okay, but aren't made with the best parts (like the Sony batteries that light on fire). Also, my experience with Compaq's has been good. Actually, I'd choose an HP over a Compaq, but either are great since Compaq was bought by HP, but the only reason it's still called Compaq is because HP doesn't have the rights to change it or something. Hope this helps. Oh...don't go Gateway....bad.

Go with the dell. Will you be putting movies on the hard drive? In which case, you MAY want to look at an upgrade on how much space you have because they obviously take a lot of room, but it isn't necessary. And yeah, get XP. Tried Vista and hated Microsoft even more. It looks really sexy, but other than that, I don't really like it. I don't like having to have a high end computer for the sake of an operating system.

I would much rather go with dell. From my experiences, the Compaq that I had wasn't that great; but that was before hp brought out compaq I think?

DELL if you buy one ready built!

Compaq are a pain to upgrade etc..

I would suggest building a PC yourself

A) its cheaper
B) You know whats on it.

1- Get a case.
2- Get a Harddrive
3- Get a Motherboard
4- Get Ram that goes in it
5- Get a CPU that goes in it
6- Get a Graphics card that fits.
7- Screw it all in
8- Power up
9 - Install windows.

( Use any old CD rom drives FDD etc monitors you may have )

Much cheaper and normally WAY more powerful.

If you in the UK... try http://www.overclockers.co.uk

Very cheap and very good !

Enjoy.
