Two things would race thru my mind.
1. Could I save them? If not, then no I wouldn't try.
2. Who would I be sacrificing my life for? If a kid, yes. If an elderly person, probably not.

well, you used the word 'rescue' so i am assuming that doing so would 'save' both - but if i had to exchange my life to save another [say daughter] i would in an instant.

Yes, I would. If they died and I knew in my heart that there was a possiblity of my saving them and I didn't do it, I wouldn't be able to live with myself.

Now that all depends on how they got there, and how is was...... if it was anyone I loved, then yep, Id die trying to save them or "it".
