There are people that may have damage to the language centre in their brain that means they will not understand their written name or if someone says it out loud. It is nothing to do with stupid, it's a circuitry malfunction in the brain. They may otherwise be very very clever.

I have, Me! I have two first names (which is common where I am from), and everyone always calls me by my second name, not the first, so one day when I was starting at a new job, for introduction day they wrote one of those lame Hello my name is cards with my first first name and my last name and I just couldn't find my name in the cards. It might be stupid, but hey, it was real.

yes i work in long term care for the elderly and there many older people that don't know time, place or person. its very sad but true, and its not stupid at all!
