Ok I'm sitting in position 7 of an 8 person table (one of the last to bet) I've been given a pair of Jacks Person after the big blind opens with $1500 bet which is called twice before it got to me. I've got about $5000 in chips in front of me, should I call, raise or fold. This was a hand I was in last night. What would you have done?

Should have said this is all pre flop. The cards had been strange all night, not many good hands winning. Everyone playing pretty tight as well

It's a high pocket pair. I'd have called. Of course, at most casinos, people tend to scoff at pocket hooks, because any paired Ace, king, or queen will beat you. However, you can still hit another jack, or a straight, or a full house, etc. Almost any pocket pair is worth seeing a flop if the price is right.

You have 5k in chips, and it's a 1.5k bet? Yes, definately call. I bet two of the people in that pot had small pocket pairs, and the better probably had something like Ace King. Doesn't mean he's going to hit an Ace or a King.

Definate call.

well you never said what the blinds were, anyhow's i will go on the fact that $1500 is a big bet, so JJ is a risky hand and my thinking would be if 2 people called the $1500 i would probably think that the possiblity they have 2 over cards or 1 over card with a good kicker say ace 10 or myby a smaller pair, this is what i would do if i went all in it would probably be a coin toss, but i never go all in pre-flop unless am short stacked, i would call the $1500 see the flop, if i liked the flop then it would be all in, if the flop was say K 3 Q, and sumone bet i would fold,

Almost certainly at least one of the three has a pocket pair others AK or close, first may be trying it on, depends what stacks others are holding could you take on a definite all in after flop, I would call and see flop, JJ is always very dodgy an easy beat if AK or Q show but a strong hand if they are not seen on the flop great start for 3 kind, house, high straight or strong 2 pair.

you don't say whether this is a cash game or a multi table. generally you will never win a multi table unless at some stage you start to play aggressive, usually best when you get down to the last 2 - 3 tables, if you just call, you have no idea where you are in the hand so double the bet or go all-in will force 2 of the hands to fold depending on their stack size. you have 4th best hand preflop and will win pot 7 out 10 times, again depending on how many callers. obviously a cash game you should play a bit more cautiously, so just call preflop and play hand accordingly, its funny how the using of your own money changes your perspective against that of a tourney. good luck

haha the old jacks aye. well seems that as 2 other called £1500, they are probably sitting on ace queen or something like that. The text books are supposed to say stick it all in as it is a tough hand to play but I have done that numerous times and lost. As long as they dont have a higher pocket than you then you will go in preflop in front. You have to judge your opposition as well though as they may seem cockey with aces. Also some people try and steal blinds by betting big as they know people wont call.

Would like to know how you got on with the jacks. (my least favourite hand)

Call. You have the queen, king, and ace to worry about, even if no one else has a pair higher than you. If it's pre-flop, you shouldn't fold any pairs higher than 10's, so you can stay in it but not get too involved in case a Q, K or A shows up on the flop.

Call.

Assuming from the previous calls that half a dozen AKQ are in the other hands, then it's about 50/50 whether another AKQ hits the table, with pretty slim odds on more than one appearing.

The odds of picking up another J are about 1 in 6.

Of course, there's a slim chance someone has pocket Aces, Kings or Queens.

Overall things are just about in your favour. Worth sticking around.

I have lost with pocket aces loads of times (who has not) think I would have played it safe and just call.
