I advice you to take the Amtrak for a cheaper alternative than the plane. Here, you will see a better view of the places you had passed by. The chairs are comfortable & comfort rooms are like the ones found in the airplanes. You can buy food over there in the train.
I had been to California for almost 6 months. I had stayed in different places. I was just lucky that I had friends & relatives around who adopted me for a certain time. I started in San Francisco, cost of living is higher, tax is highest at 8.5%, however, it has its advantages. People who live here dont bring their cars since parking is hard & expensive. Even those who work here & live in the nearby Contra Costa County take the BART & leave their cars in the BART station. A cousin used to live here x 30 years without a car. you can ride the Muni Bus & transfer from 1 bus to another within time frame without paying again. A studio type would cost almost $1,000.00. In the Contra Costa County like Concord, Walnut Creek, Pittsburgh, rental is almost the same, however, it is harder to take a ride if you dont have a car.
In San Diego, there are trolleys and buses but there are other areas not accessible to this. In National City rental is lower at $700++ for a 2 rooms bedroom, dining room, living room. It is just across the Paradise Valley Hospital. In La Jolla where University of California, San Diego, UCSD is located, rental can be $1,000 for a 2 room condominium unit. Students share in their rental, my nieces together with their classmates had rented a house, costing them $400.00 each month. Try riding the trolley & you will be able to see the whole of San Diego when you ride all the trolley cars. There are buses at most of the trolley stations. I had 2 maps of San Diego which is not that complete. I had only appreciated the whole of San Diego after riding the trolley. There is a more complete version of their map , however, it is to tiny to be seen by the naked eye. You need a magnifying lens to read it. Even residents of these place doesnt know their surroundings or downtown well. They get lost!
In El Centro, rental is lower, it is almost 1 hour away from San Diego. My cousins place here has 3 bedrooms, 2 comfort rooms, a big living room, with dining & a big backyard, rental is $900.00++. The disadvantage is that it is a bit hotter here compared to the rest of California. However, they have a 24 hour Walmart here.
I had been to Irvine & Alisso Viejo in Orange County. This is a nice community too. Travel from San Diego is via the Amtrak.
LA is too crowded, too hot! It makes you feel that you are going to have a headache on your way to work because it is too congested. There are places where transportation is 24 hours like in Hollywood. You have to see houses shared by 4-5 people to make your rental lower. Travel from San Diego to LA can be via Greyhound which is cheaper & Amtrak.
Camarillo is in Ventura County near Oxnard, Simi Valley & Malibu. I had seen the biggest houses here in all the places I had been. I had been to a millionaires house here. There are gated places here. The environment is too quiet but nice atmosphere. It is about an hour's drive to LA. I had travelled from San Diego to Camarillo via the Amtrak.
I had been to different places to determine in what community I would fit well. I had loved Camarillo best! Nice weather, not too crowded, near LA & accessible to San Diego, LA via Amtrak.

You don't say where you're from. If you want to come here via plane, your best bet for lower prices is to travel during the off season (meaning when kids are in school and there are no major holidays). Usually October and January (except right around New Year's) are good times. If you want to relocate, remember that the cost of living here is very high. Look for a home in a small town a good distance from a major city. This may mean commuting to work, but that's what the majority of people that live here do. Expect to spend at least $400,000 to buy a moderate home or spend about $800-$1500 a month for rent for a small apartment. I rent a 900 sq. foot one-bedroom apartment for $1100. You may find less expensive, but quaranteed that the square footage will be less. Gas is very expensive here, yet the roads are always backed up with cars. If you are able to find a job out here, try to work near public transportation if possible. You'll save a lot of money and headaches from sitting in traffic and driving in circles looking for a parking space.
