I think he is ambivalent toward him at first... but mesmerized by him at the same time. At the same time he is repulsed by Gatsby's excesses and frightful behavior, he also can't seem to escape Gatsby and he certainly romanticizes him.

I think of Nick as adopting a tone of ambivalence because he is somewhat envious of just how Gatsby is regarded by others. Poor SOB.

He respects him in ways, while in others he thinks he's just crazy for thinking so highly of Daisy and trying to hard to get her back.
