I have to write an essay in physics... Please help!!?

I need to write an essay and need ideas. The topic I picked is “Conservation of Mechanical Energy"

Here is a quote from the overview that was given to me:

In this physics course you learned a great many scientific concepts: Newton’s three laws, Snell’s law, Archimedes’ principal, conservation of mechanical energy, heat, temperature, gravity, kinetic theory, wave theory of sound and light, to name just a few. Many of these concepts were an entirely different way of understanding and explaining observations. For example, the heliocentric view of the solar system replaced the Ptolemaic view of the solar system.
In this project you will select a science concept that you learned in this class and explain the previous erroneous concept that the new concept replaced. If this was a course in astronomy, for example, you would explain the Ptolemaic system.

Does anybody have any suggestions on what I can write about for "Conservation of Mechanical Energy"

Mechanical work is a force applied through a distance, defined mathematically as the line integral of a scalar product of force and displacement vectors. Work is a scalar quantity which can be positive or negative.

As seen from the above definition, force can do positive, negative, or zero work. For instance, a centripetal force in uniform circular motion does zero work (because the scalar product of force and displacement vector is zero as they are orthogonal to each other). Another example is Lorentz magnetic force on moving electric charge which always does zero work because it is always orthogonal to the direction of motion of the charge.
