If it is a screw type, then remember C and O., in that order.

Remember CO stands for carbon monoxide, which you do not want in the house, right? So, C and O - in that order - are not too difficult to remember.

Now, C is on the left, O is on the right. Keep turning the handle to the left to close. Keep turning the handle to the right to Open.

the best way to remember damper is sitting the same way the handle is if handle is horizontal then is closed if vert its open
