Universities typically don't give a set GPA that you must have. The average GPA of admitted freshmen, however, is about a 4.3 weighted.

GPA isn't going to be as relevant as SAT, SAT Subject Test scores, probably. GPAs -- what they mean, how they are calculated -- vary by school. Colleges re-weight GPAs to make them more consistent, anyway. SATs and Subject Tests and ACTs are standardized and easier to compare. Berkeley is a good school, of course, so the standards will be pretty high. Check out www.collegeboard.com and look at the school's profile, it'll give you an idea re: SAT score ranges. Of course, that's just one part of the whole...what about extracurricular activities, sports, volunteer work...and special talents you can bring to the school. And you never know, sometimes they're looking to get students who want to major in a certain area, which just happens to be what you're interested in. Do your very best in high school, take the most challenging courseload you can...get involved in other activities, show a real passion for them...study/practice for the standardized tests, show a real interest in the school (request literature, take a tour), get great letters of recommendations from your teachers...and hope for the best. Go to the best school you get into.

It looks like CA residents have to have a 3.0, while nonresidents have to have a 3.4. In addition there are test score requirements that go along with the required GPA's.
