Kuching means cat. Sarawak has an unusual history and was the first British colony in Malaysia and was ruled by the white rajahs, the Brookes family, until the Second World War. I could go into more detail, but it would be easier for you to visit the great museum in Kuching.

Kuching is the capital city and has grown hugely since my first visit in 1988. It now has some fairly cool bars and clubs, and international standard hotels - Crown Plaza, Hilton, Holiday Inn and Merdeka Palace. It still has a small town feel though - amazing food stalls, great local culture, interesting museums etc. The Cultural Village is close by - about 40 mins out of town right by the Damai Beach resorts. Kuching hosts the Rainforest Festival every year.

Outside Kuching, there are other largish cities - Sibu, Miri etc. However, it's definitely worth visiting the Mulu Caves, which is one of the largest cave complexes in the world - truly stunning. Or a short trip upriver from Kuching will take you on a visit to the Iban tribes in their longhouses. Ibans, Dayaks and other local tribes were headhunters - but don't worry, you're safe now. They're friendly, fascinating and hospitable people - but watch out for the local rice wine - tuak (sp?) - it's fatally strong.

I have visited Kuching a number of times and even lived there for 6 months before I started uni. I have a huge soft spot for the city and the state and would highly recommend a visit - it's a beautiful, wonderful place.

Kuching is a seaside place - a great way to spend a laid back holiday. It is the only place which has a Cat Museum. Kuching means "cat". From Kuching, you can go to Bako National Park - it's the place for sea and mountain and tropical forest - the home of proboscis monkeys and bearded wild pigs. It has different trekking possibilities - from bird watching to waterfalls, pitcher plants. The camp has a hostel and very friendly staff!
