The most important factor to note about this dream is that you were a "witness" in both events, which signifies that problems and conflict exist in your life, but mostly impact and affect other people.
Another key to this dream is your father. Don't make the mistake and assume the dream is a clue about him. When we dream, often our minds fill in gaps with familiar objects (such as your father) to make sense of it. Perhaps someone close to you really is being crushed w/ problems and conflict (the cars), but most likely it's someone else.
Let's talk about your "helplessness" in the dream. You said you had a feeling like there was nothing you could do. Let me explain that part. In the normal course of life, we are helpless and unable to do anything to help. For example, the war in Iraq. Many of us want to help the people who are suffering, but can't do so. Or think of a child w/ cancer... we want to help, but can't! In your dream, you were helpless. And this made you scared, since you wish there was something you can do about it, especially since you envisioned your father.
But like I said before, the people that died most likely were just characters your mind randomly chose to embelish the scenario. And your reaction was also a familiar one. The cars also were randomly selected. The only message to interpret from the dream was the "crashing" part. A symbol of conflict and problems... most like either your own or someone close to you.
Hope that helps.

Your dream does suggest that you have an anxiety about certain people close to you. It is not clear if you are in the car or not when the accident occurs in your dreams. If you are, then you see yourself as connected in some direct way - perhaps as one whom you feel should somehow see the accident coming and perhaps prevent it in some way, i.e. to prevent something bad happening to the other person whom you know. A twist on this may be that despite your closeness, you realize there is little you can do to prevent the harm coming to them. In any case, some advance feeling is indicated that something undesirable will befall someone close to you when this happens. The water represents a particular peril - one of losing someone into a murky unknown - something bad is sensed but you cannot pinpoint the threat. It carries an extra element of danger - unknowns always do and no one likes the idea of being trapped under water, as one find one's self after such an accident. These dreams are your inner mind's way of affirming certain fears that you have. Try to identify whom and what may be driving them. If you can identify specifically related drivers then you might talk with whomever is concerned about the feeling you have that something is amiss. Perhaps they can clear up things that concern you or perhaps even take note of something not so good (these are not necessarily life-threatening things that could drive such dreams) and do something to prevent some problem or other. In any case, you may find relief in that you've done what you rationally can to alleviate your own fears. All the best to you.

Having dream about car accidents could be due to reports you heard from news, actual events from friends or...
It basically means that you feel insecure about driving. You may be into some sort of unstable condition now. Stress is one of the things that can cause your dream like that. Due to the fact that you drive every day (I assume), you more or less get attached to the car.
Car symbolizes your support in the dream. You are losing support in one sense. And that could also cause you dream because you are stressed out. Minds are tricky things. Sometimes we mixed our stress with items that are closed to us.
In your case, you are stressed out and projecting car accidents
could somehow ease your helpless conscience. You may ask how. Our subconscious minds often tell us thing in a opposite direction. In this case, you do not want anything bad happend to you but you want yourself to know ahead what it will happend if it does happen and so you vent it all out.
Suggestion: relax a little in life. try to talk out your problems with others. Perhaps after your stress is released, you will have no problem sleeping

Do not distress too much...
People in our dreams represent parts of ourselves. For instance dreaming of your sister in trouble means YOU are in trouble.
Dreaming of your Dad in a PHYSICAL JAM means YOU are in a jam, physically.
2 dreams 2 themes, restaurant, stomach, building, collapsing, control... Horrible feeling - You are in trouble. Police= rules, guidelines, what you know to be right. By going too fast you bypassed the rules and got yourself in a physical jam. Something to do with your stomach. Something you yourself are ultimately responsible for. Two cars crashing, some kind of physical collision hurting you in the stomach area. You jammed stomach really hard and knew you would die from it.
Your mind is trying to tell you something about your body, that's why all the car dreams. You are not recognizing the problams, that's why you are not IN the cars, but you are watching from the sidelines.
What's up with your stomach? Are you bulimic or anorexic? Do you have an ulcer, or could you be afraid you have gotten pregnant?

Are you watching scary movies/shows, or looking at scary images. Avoid these things. These things usually cause nightmares. Maybe your dreams are trying to tell you something. Hopefully you DON'T get into a car accident.

Try staying away from scary movies or shows. That was what caused me to cry from nightmares.
