Chevrolet had the 283 cubic inch engine in the 1957 Chevrolet, prior to that Chevrolet had a 265 cubic inch engine. The 57 Chevy came with a "Power Pack" option, 283 ci engine, 4 barrel carb, 3 speed with overdrive. It was fast.

I know I had a 1978 Monte Carlo with a 289 cid engine in it. It took me a while to figure out what it was because I didn't know Chevy ever made a V8 that size, but once I did, I promptly junked it. All resources I could find said the engine was garbage. I can't remember for sure, but I think it might have actually been smaller than 289. Yeah, I double checked - the smallest V8 in a Monte Carlo was actually a 267, built in 1978, 1979. Not sure if I answered this question or not. Never mind

not a 289, but they did build a 283 from '57 until some time in the late 60's, when I believe the 307 took it's place. It was at the same time as the 327 being replaced with the 350.

I know that Chevy used a 289 V 8 in the 1917 Model D. I don't think they have used one since.

I guess the correct answer to that would be a big NEVER!
289's were, as many have stated, a Ford motor. So I guess you answered your own question and didn't even know it!
289's were used in the sixties in numerous Ford car and truck models.
