Therrien has said that they will not have a captain for the season, and that he'll go with alternate captains like he did last year:

The Penguins do not have a Captain this season. They have been using a system where they use three A's (assistant captains) instead of a C. The A's are as follows, at home Crosby, Recchi, and Gonchar have the A's. and on the road Crosby, Recchi, and LeClair have them. So basically Gonchar and LeClair rotate the third A. Honestly though whether he has a C or not Sidney Crosby is this teams captain. He is one of the most vocal guys, and you can just tell that the rest of the team follows his lead. I fully expect him the have the C on his chest next season if not sooner.

Craig is correct sort of, the Pens had a captain last year, Mario Lemieux. He got hurt, then retired and they did not name a replacement. In his honour, they went without a captain this year, hoping Crosby would take on the leadership role and be rewarded next season with the captaincy. Or more correct than I thought, missed the link. Craig is very correct.

no captain this season for Pittsburgh. On a side note anyone think they'll have to move, I sure as hell hope not they were the first expansion team in the NHL and there's a lot of history there.

There's no captain for the Pens this year. They have three 'A's. I think they wanted Crosby to be captain, but he's still young and inexperienced so they decided to hold it off for a year. Also it's a tribute ot Mario because not just anybody can succeed him.

There is no set captain this year. Out of respect to Mario Lemieux for what he did for the organization there will be only assistant captains this year. Crosby will get it next year for sure.

They don't have one and I can understand asking, how many other teams go through a season without one? Actually the first game or two I thought maybe I had missed the announcement and was watching for the "C" on a jersey.
