Three of the original 13 colonies kept their colonial names when they became states: the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the Commonwealth of Virginia. When the Commonwealth of Kentucky became a state in 1792, it chose to retain the same designation as the Commonwealth of Virginia from which it was formed.
These four states should not be confused with the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico), which is a true commonwealth in both name and status.

Not sure, VA is a Commonwealth too. I just had some problems with the DMV and my husband trying to get his Hazmat endorsement to drive a big rig.he drives now but they want him to have it just in case they have a haz mat load. Well, he's from Canada and been a citizen since the 70's and was naturalized in Maine. He had the only certificate that he was ever given, letters from Pres. Carter and so on. Drove for 20 yrs. took a break and dropped his endorsement. Well, since 9-11 everything has changed. he has to spend 220.00 to get a Certificate of Citizenship through our Gvt. I called the Transportation and Safety Board in washington and they are the Feds. They are Homeland Security. They make the rules but the man I spoke to said that VA has it's own rules and lets the DMV make the rules that they go by, they do not go by the TSB rules but their own and you could tell he was mad too. So, I called everyone I knew. I called the Governor's office and they told me that I would have to do what the DMV said. I told her that all the truckers call VA the Communist State and I never understood it but I do NOW and if I didn't own property I'd be gone from this place. My husband has worked hard, paid taxes and so has his whole family and he has to pay money, blackmail to me, to drive chemicals which he did for 20 yrs. allready. Crazy and I can see why people loose it because I almost did. I cried, pleaded and everything I could do because ai am disabled and he had just changed jobs and had no ins. then they want 220. of his hard earned cash. The Mexicans don't have a problem but we do? I was really irate to say the least. That's been over a month, got a letter saying they got our forms and request and money but, nothing else. You have to do this by mail or make an appt. at their DC office or Norfolk office and be there at that appointment. So, they are going to put the same info they all ready have on another form abnd we might get it back. They didn't even have the forms that they are asking for until after 9-11!! So it's like he never was a citizen as far as Hazmat goes though he drove out of Eastman Chemical Co. for years.Sorry to go on and on but this country has a problem and someday the people are going to get tired of it and rebel. That will be the only way to stop what is happening to us. Though I hate to see that. The party system stinks, they all lie no one can really do anything. They tax the working man 3-4 times on each dollar he makes and give it away to other people. We still have to worry about how to pay our bills but we have to or we loose what we have. It's just not right. So, google it and I'm so mad I can't even read it right now but, I really didn't know that Kentucky was a Commonwealth. good luck.

well Puerto Rico is a commonwealth but not a state hmm, according to wikipedia.org The term literally meant "common well-being". Thus commonwealth originally meant a state governed for the common good as opposed to an authoritarian state governed for the benefit of a given class of owners. But Kentucky is governed by the US congress so Im clueless sorry!

Really? That's a new one. Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth. Kentucky is a state. A Commonwealth has the same basic privileges as a state, their citizens cannot vote in USA elections. Last I heard, if you are a citizen of Kentucky you can vote in USA elections.
