A song is typically about 3-4 MB. 1GB should hold somewhere between say 250 and 300 songs.

One of your other responders is right. It depends on the average size of the songs you like. I like a lot of classic rock Led Zep.,Moody Blues Pink Floyd. Songs like that are about 1.5 to 2x larger than most. They take up more space, therefore less actual songs.
Do not worry about it 1GB is really good for music. Download what you like do not worry about the quantity. I have been pricing ipods to purch after the holidays for myself. If you can see your way clear ,choose 2GB or more if you plan on downloading pictures or podcasts too.
