A grain silo has a cylindrical shape. Its diameter is 18 ft, and its height is 47 ft . What is the volume of grain that can be stored in the silo?
(Use the value 3.14 for (pie), and round your answer to the nearest cubic foot. Be sure to include the correct unit in your answer.)

Use volume formula for a cylinder:

V = pi r² h

You know r = d/2 = 18/2 = 9 ft.

You know h = 47 ft.

So, using 3.14 for pi as your question requests, you get the following:

V = 3.14 * (9 ft.) ² * 47 ft.

= 3.14 * 9 * 9 * 47 ft ³

= 11,954 ft ³ (rounded)

Hope that helped!

Hi. If you are confused, you need the area of the base (3.14 times 9 squared, or 3.14 x 81) then multiply this answer by the height of 47 feet. Hope this helps.

think of a cylinder as a stack of lots of circles on top of each other...find the area of the circle, and times it by the height to find the volume.

area of circle=pi r^2

(get it? HAH! pies are square...pi r^2....hahahah)

then times by 47. for the correct unit, make sure it is ft^3, (cubic feet)

Volume of Cylinder = Area of base x height

Area of base = pi r^2 = 3.14x 9^2 = 254.34

Volume = 254.3 x 47= 11,954 cu ft

Volume = pie*radius*height

3.14*(18/2)^2*47 = 11,953.98 or 11,954 cubic feet

V=Pi*r^2*h
v=3.14*9^2*47
V=11953.98 cube ft

pi * r^2 *h
pi * 9^2 * 47

google built-in calculator
(just paste or type into search bar)
gives
pi * (9^2) * 47 = 11 960.0432
or using less accurate 3.14,
3.14 * (9^2) * 47 = 11 953.98

(google calculator put a space
11 953.98 rather than 11953.98 or 1,953.98)
