I'm taking oral contraceptives and am not due for a period but am getting a brown discharge. There's no smell or discomfort. Just wondering what i could be due to? is it possible that it's due to an ovarian cyst?

A brown discharge is common towards the end of your period, it could also be the contraceptive you are on for example if it's 21 day pill and you carried on through without a break, if it's still there after a week or so just go to the docs and get a second opinion i'm sure you will be ok hope this helps.

Female Health
Vaginal Discharge

Vaginal discharge is normal and varies during your menstrual cycle. Before ovulation (the release of the egg), there is A LOT of mucous produced, up to 30X more than after ovulation. It is also more watery and elastic during that phase of your cycle. You may want to wear panty liners during that time.

The things to be worried about include if the discharge has a yellow or green color, is clumpy like cottage cheese, or has a bad odor. If worried, see a doctor.

Different Types of Discharge
Is this normal?

White: Thick, white discharge is common at the beginning and end of your cycle. Normal white discharge is not accompanied by itching. If itching is present, thick white discharge can indicate a yeast infection.

Clear and stretchy: This is "fertile" mucous and means you are ovulating.

Clear and watery: This occurs at different times of your cycle and can be particularly heavy after exercising.

Yellow or Green: May indicate an infection, especially if thick or clumpy like cottage cheese or has a foul odor.

Brown: May happen right after periods, and is just "cleaning out" your vagina. Old blood looks brown.

Ok now firstly you didnt mention if you have 'just' started taking the pill!!! if you have Dont Panic it may be that your mucus membraine from the neck of your cervix is too thick and you are experiencing what is a period but very very thick and pasty... (i know this sounds grim but does it look like the texture of wet talcom powder) if it does no need to worry... just make sure you make a gp appointment to make sure that you have not got any small infections or increase in yeast in your womb...

If this brown gunk continues for more than week... then definately go straight to the gp.... until then take a nice long bath and douch!! (wash your ehem out completely!!)

I would imagaine that this could be linked with a period (as this is often at the end of a period) i woudnt worry to much and wait and see what happens, if it does not stop after a few days go and see the doctor

I'm on Seasonale, which is an extended cycle pill. Generally I'll get the same thing towards the end of the second month or so. It is normal. It's the same discharge that one experiences at the end of her period.

brown discharge is usually old blood left over from after a period.

Any pain? If not, it's probably hormonal. If it doesn't stop, or happens again next month then see your GP.

Brown discharge, btw, is old uterine blood - so it's very unlikely to be anything to do with your ovaries.
