I've been in this business for many years, answering this question for over 15 years. Just antivirus software alone will help noone.

Protecting from spyware and protecting your IP address are needed first, and that means you'd want to purchase a firewall, antispyware, and antivirus software.

Buying an internet security suite combines all three programs and lowers your price.

You want free? Try Zone Alarm (free version of firewall), Adaware (free spyware software), and Avast (free antivirus software). This is a great free combo.

If you want to pay for the best Suite, I would purchase Zone Alarm Suite. Thats the best (better than ANY free solution because it cryptically checks files for authenticity, something freebies do not do) and easiest to use, in my opinion. Norton is huge and inneffective. Mcafee misses too much. Good luck!

.
You will NOT want to run multiple anti-virus programs. They will conflict and not do the job.
You do NOT want to use Norton...it sucks, and does not do the job, plus it bogs down your pc because it's so frigging huge.

I'll give you the link to a FREE
yes FREE cool tool I've been using and recommending for 3 years.
No virus' have infected...and
a good number have been caught BEFORE downloaded. I love this tool.

1. Get rid of your current anit-virus software.
Go to Add/Remove Programs > and find the program (if you have one) and select REMOVE.

2. Go the AVAST and download their FREE Home Edition of a great anti-virus tool.
Right click on this link > select Open in New Window
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

3. Install AVAST > run it to do a THOROUGH scan, and anything it finds select DELETE

4. Let AVAST run 24/7...it works !!!
It not only cleans your machine initially;
then it never allows any virus to download again...it catches any before it can download > and give you the instant option to DELETE.

Get going!

AVG Free Editon. I would also suggest downloading the free trial of AVG Anti-Spyware. That stuff really works. And I don't think it really hurts to have more that 1 as long as they don't clash with each other. In fact it might have more security. I have 3,Windows Defender,AVG Free Edition, and AVG Anti-Spyware. And F.Y.I. NEVER USE NORTON!!!!IT WILL CRASH YOUR COMPUTER!!! And it never works. It just sits there.

It is never good to have multiple programs, because they conflict.
For anti-spyware it is good because the compliment each other.
I use McAfee antivirus. It is a subscription,so it is always keeping itself up to date.

You can't use 2 at the same time. Test best 3 (which are all free) are Anti-Vir, Avg, and Avast.
