i have a bunch of pictures and things i would like to put together in a sort of collage format, just very neatly. what kind of paper or backing would you suggest? (some of the backing would be showing, and i have some scrapbooking paper that is nice looking but not very sturdy)

I would get a piece of foamcore the size you want. Then, using a spray adhesive (so there are no bumps from glue), I would use some of your decorative paper, or even gift wrap. You can use photo corners if these are pictures you might want to change out. You get them in the scrapbooking section also.

The foamcore could be finished with a frame, or you could just glue a ribbon/trim around the edge.

Spray mount the scrapbook paper to a piece of chipboard available at some craft stores. This will make a sturdy surface and will also be thin enough to put into a standard frame if you wish.

This is a great article that shows layouts of photos to give you an idea of how to arrange them

card stock is the sturdiest for your project and this link shows other supplies, adhesives and embellishments

The scrapbooking section has more links in red on the left covering layouts which are helpful.
What a nice project, good luck with it.!

Cardstock paper, or posterboard.
