because people JFK or LBJ or who had a long name would be best known thru their in initials! i mean who wants to call a president by his full name? George Washington is simple...so is Dwight Eisenhower, but when the names get big or long the initials come into play! also, maybe some of them also had the population call them by their initials which became a phenomenon over the years! when you want to talk about a specific president and he has a lon name wouldnt you rather use his initials so that everyone knew what president you were talking about?

I think it was mainly a journalistic fad in the middle 20th Century. I don't recall any since LBJ. May have had its origins in the newspaper's need to conserve space on big, front page headlines. You could use a bigger, more eye-catching font as your eye-catcher.
