If you are anything like I used to be when I was a teenager (in Sweden in the 80's), then "Legal Age" doesn't really mean anything. :-D
The problem is that, when an age-restriction is applied to something, it becomes a lot more attractive for people who fall outside the set limit. :-)
A lot of the limits (for all countries) are arbitrary and make no sense at all. Like (for Sweden)... You can start a family at 16, but cannot buy alcohol in a shop until you are 20, but you can drink alcohol when you turn 18. You are considered responsible enough to buy a knife when you are 15, but if you use it to hurt someone you are not responsible enough to be tried as an adult until you are 18...
My personal solution is: Replace all age-limits with common sense. :-)

Hey Happy Birthday!!! 17 is a great age mate. Ya know, you have to bear in mind the numbers don't matter it's how you feel about doing something now that you're older.
You don't have to drink just cos you can, you shouldn't presume you're a good driver just cos you can get a licence.
Bottom line-do what you want, don't hurt yourself or others and don't get caught if you're not supposed to be doing it!!

Oh Happy Birthday! Well, you can film yourself having sex and it's only a year away before you can watch it back... But I guess you could do that last year... hmmm, have you got a provisional license yet to start driving? Because you have to get a move on they're thinking of making learners take lessons for a whole year. Other than that, there's not much - have fun though!

In the US, you can now have consensual sex in most states (straight or gay). Not much else changes at 17 here - you are still a minor until 18, you can alrady drive in most states, and you won't be able to go into bars until you are 21.
In other countries, it will depend on local laws.

You've missed one whole year of legal sex (with parental consent), lottery tickets & smoking.
Howver, you can now drive a car (safely!).
Drinking will have to wait til next year.
