The delivery method of creatine is usually a simple sugar. Over time you could screw up your body and you would become diebetic. But I used creatine for a few years and I noticed big gains in strength and muscle mass growth. And the water thing. You will be thirsty all the time.

All of these answers saying creatine causes renal problems are fallacious. Creatine will exasperate an existing kidney disease or raise the probability of acquiring a kidney disease, if you have a predisposition for one. However, you'll be fine if you have healthy kidneys. As always, check with your primary healthcare provider before starting any exercise program conjoined with supplementation.

Also, your weight-lifting routine should be relatively intense. If not, you are wasting your time and money on this supplement. Additionally, you should be consuming enough protein along with creatine. If not, your creatine supplementation will be all for naught.

Make sure you follow the directions provided on the creatine bottle's label. You may hear people who say they take twice the amount than what is listed on the label. Don't do it, since whatever you don't use with be excreted out when you urinate. This is just a waste of money. The amount you get from following the directions is sufficient.

Short-Term Side Effects:

- Diarrhea (especially during loading phase)
- Water weight gain

Long-Term Side Effects:

-Indirect side-effect: lean muscle mass.

Other long-term side effects have not been established, since creatine has only been utilized by athletes on a daily basis since the early to mid '90s. Further, more scientific studies are needed in this area.

Personally, I have used creatine off and on for about nine years. I've always gotten best gains in muscle mass by using it versus when I hadn't. Be aware that results will vary across individuals. I have a friend who had used it for about a year and saw no improvement in his physique than when he was not taking it.

The most common side effect is weight gain due to more water in the muscle and increase in the lean-muscle tissue. Other side effects observed were dehydration, muscle cramps, nausea, diarrhea, gastrointestinal distress and seizures. For persons with existing kidney or renal disorders, creatine was found to cause renal stress because of more stress on the kidneys.

As far as I know, there are no adverse side effects of creatine. Your body produces it naturally.

The only documented adverse effect is an increase in body mass.
