Probably the most unbiased or most biased news shows on the air, depending on where you stand. Neither of them like either party, they draw people to current world events, something which schools have been failing at for years. They make people want to actually pick up the papers and research items to find out if what they're reporting is actually true...and most often, everything is very accurate (and extremely funny). Kudos to both Stephen and Jon for being the two most fascinating men on television.

They are very effective in spotlighting the foolishness and artifice that pervades politics and the media coverage of news.

Does it make people more cynical and skeptical of what they see? Yes. Is that bad? Seems to me that the media and political PR people, who now drive the messages that are sent, deserve no less. It's already cynical to fashion the message based on PR techniques (which basically looks for ways to manipulate the target audience), so why shouldn't it be viewed cynically?

Supposedly, every congressman that Colbert interviewed on his "Better Know a District" series all reclaimed their seats on Nov. 7th.
But I doubt that any of them really influence our opinions, although they are a couple of the funniest men on T.V. Mostly, they just present news/politics smothered with humor. Often, their news is a day or two old though.

Read into this what you wish - a recent survey done by a major university - can't remember which one, Harvard or Yale, I think - shows that something like 30% of people under the age of 30 get their "news" from The Daily Show and think its real. It's a comedy show - as in satire, people!!

They are like a vaccine that provides immunity to the Republican propoganda to young people still trying to learn about politics. For established republican and democrats, it has no effect but they sure make democrats feel good about themselves by exposing just how freakin' bad the other side really is!

i think their effect has been exaggerated in the media...i don't consider them anything but entertainers...they do a lot of political material, and i find most of it hilarious...they both show a good understanding of politics, which can be scary, because a lot of the time they actually get deeper into events and issues than the broadcast or cable outlets seem to...

i like them but i think keith olbermann, wolf blitzer, and chris matthews are better and i'm 21...but whatever gets young people in politics and governmant is great!!!

I think youtube will hopefully have more of an effect on everyone...because it allows you to view politicians slipups over and over and over...like george allen's macaca statement...and conrad burns sleeping during a meeting...i think youtube will be a force for politicians to reckon with in the coming years

I don't think they have any effect on politics. The people who watch their shows are generally pretty liberal to begin with.
