My Canadian friend uses Limewire to download music, and he says he cannot get in trouble because he is in Canada and there is no law that doesn't say you can't download music illegally. However, even if he downloads American-company music, he still can't get in trouble? We were just wondering what the answer was.

It is legal to share music in Canada because we pay a levee (a tax) on all media that we record on. (cd's, tapes etc.) The courts basically said that they already charge us for using recordable media so they can't now turn around and say that we cannot record on it. It is legal to download, but not upload is something else I have heard.

It's great to be a Canadian for that reason :-)
I have 1700 songs downloaded from Limewire and it is not against the law here. It is in the states.
Amazing but true.

Sure can. He is infringing on an international copyright law. He is also violating an American law, and in this case he is doing so within the full scope of American jurisdiction by using an international network to infringe on US copyright laws over the Internet. All the waivers and terms Limewire has you agree to before it lets you join allow it to aid and assist you in doing these things but also allows them to waive any responsibility in the event that their site leads to an arrest or conviction on such legal matters. Limewire is all around bad news, they aid you in breaking the law, and bind you to a contract that makes you solely responsible for what they helped you do.... And yer Canadian friend is just trying to impress u. Either that or he doesn't know better. Either way don't listen to him.

**EDIT**
hmmmm... It seems I was wrong.good job everyone else who said it was legal... I looked it up with a few sources including that nifty little link posted by the answerer after me... whoever gave me a thumbs down, thumbs up to you...

ILLEGAL, it is STILL copyright infringement. It went on for YEARS within the U.S. earlier than the RIAA began prosecuting. Even even though it used to be most effective stopped seeing that Metallica used to be dissatisfied with Napster striking tune that wasn't published up. The RIAA most effective jumped in once they noticed they might win.

It seems he is correct - surprisingly, Canada rules downloading is legal, while uploading is illegal. See the link below
