What would a major in college for being a commercial maker be called? I don't even know how to put that in words, but just someone that makes commercials for like cars or anything. I'm thinking of maybe going into that, but I'm not sure where to start looking for a university that has a program like that. Would you just go into flim and then specialize in commercial? What would be a good college in the United States to do this at?

If you want to make movies.. go to film school. If you want to create advertising, then, the previous suggestion is a good one.. Take courses in advertising.

Making commercials is basically making little movies. The idea is to capture an audience in a short period of time. Depending on where you live, working on a film crew is a good way to learn the ropes. Getting a good basic education should take precedence over just learning to make movies, though.

In California, AFI, the American Film Institute, is where serious film makers go, usually after completing a BA. USC and UCLA each have good programs, USC being really expensive, but some great filmmakers have come out of there, Spielberg and Lucas among them. Chapman University in Orange has an up and coming film school. They have a new stage, I believe.

NYU in NYC is the east coast place for film.

Learn how to make a movie and then, find a job! Commercials are a good place to start..or to excel!

good luck.

I would think you'd want to check out a degree in business or advertising. I'm not sure that it actually has much to do with film... It's an advertising thing. If I were you, I'd try to contact some local ad agencies and ask about what kind of background the employees there have. Where did they go to school and what did they major in? I would lean more towards business or even graphic design/multimedia/etc... Maybe a trade school or a vocational school would be your best bet.
Good luck!

I have been looking at this question, off and on. for the last
2 hours.

I have come to the conclusion that you have two choices.

1) You can get a job in an ad agency as a copy writer.and then move on to actually filming commercials (not real good).

2) You can go to film school. Become a director and just do
commercials.

But the question begs another question. .Are you concerned that you would not be capable of doing features? Or do you prefer
snipets.

Probably film-making. Get a job in an advertising agency. You can work as an Account Executive, at an ad agency, and branch out into television commercials.
