where can I go to get samples of old big band swing and jazz tunes?................just to hear how they sound

Try your local libray. You can borrow cd's.

If they have CD's, try Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Woody Shaw. Eventually, try some Charles Mingus Big band.

I dont know where to download songs, but you might try downloading some movies with swing or jazz soundtracks. Woody Allen movies all have jazz. Try the Gene Krupa Story, the Glenn Miller Story (biography of band leaders.)
