I'll be moving to Montana next month. I have everything pretty much ready to go. Just one issue really-my car. I have a dodge neon that is in the process of being moved over to a salvaged title (in CA-the worst/most expensive state to get that done) & has a huge crack in the radiator. The original plan was to fix it, new(snow tires- I'll be moving in Dec.) tires and all, pack it up and head home. But I'm starting to doubt if it will make it up there and don't want to give up a car I've paid off. I know if I rented a uhaul I could tow it-but I really am not taking much at all. I need a cheap way to get my car from CA to Montana-if possible. Suggestions?

What do you mean 'in the process of being moved to a salvaged title'? If it was in a wreck and considered totalled by insurance I would collect on the insurance and give the car up to a junkyard or sell it cheap so you dont have to travel with it. Otherwise, if you really want it, you could tow it with another car. Maybe a friend would be willing to help you out. Good Luck.

The cheapest way is to actually fix it and drive it. Think about it. If you are taking a non running vehicle with you, you are going to have to fix it eventually in order to drive it, right?
So why not fix it now, drive it for a short while to work any "bugs" out and drive it to Montana. Check the cooling system (have it pressure checked and flushed-this should be done if you get the radiator replaced anyways!) and all the fluids, do all the scheduled maintenance on it and drive your car.

The tires are defintely a good idea, I grew up in Colorado. Snowy icy roads show no mercy. Good tires are a sound investment.
Good Luck, don't forget to bring your coat!

The U-haul would be the smartest, safest way, but hey, life's short, live on the edge, replace the radiator and drive it up there. If the car gets fixed properly, it shouldn't be a problem. Moving to Montana in the middle of winter - good luck with all that!

Ha, something that small you could put it in an envelope and send er off.
You are really looking for an adventure by 'trying' to drive that car to Mont. in the winter. I'd take every spare part I could possibly carry. You know, like starter, alternator, battery, 2-spare tires....
After all of that you wouldn't have much room for you or your stuff.
You could put an ad in the paper and see if anyone else is heading that way and offer to share the cost of a u-haul. And tow that poor little car. It sounds like you are attached to it.
Good luck......your gonna need it.
Really, good luck though.

I would replace the radiator(a new one is about $100), put on the snow tires. If the timing belt has not been replaced I would do that also. The car should be fine to drive.
