There is a large difference between the Playstation 3 and Playstation 2. The Playstataion 3 is 15 times more powerful than the Playstation 2.
Speaking as a gamers, I would say at the age of 8, she would NOT need a Playstation 3. I would reccommend you buying her a Nintendo Wii, because it's more child friendly oriented. But, if you want her to experience the next generation graphics but save a couple extra dollars, buy a Core System Xbox 360.
The BIG difference between the Playstation 3 and 2 is.... hardware. The Playstation 3 uses a new architect. The Playstation 3 uses the RSX 'Reality Synthensizer' as the Playstation 2 uses an old nVidia GPU. As I mentioned above the PS3 is 15 times more powerful than PS2. The graphics on games will be extremely improved. The BluRay disc drive, which is supposedly the next standard in digital disc media. HDMI outputs, and other ports, etc.
Those are SOME details about the difference. In my opinion, she would be better off with a Nintendo Wii, which will launch November 19th, 2006 for $250.00!

The only differences between the PS2 and 3 are the prices and processing systems. The PS3 has vastly improved graphics, but that has to come at a price. The PS3 costs between 500 and 600 dollars.
I would not suggest getting this system also because of your daughter's age. Most of the games released on this system will be for "hardcore" gamers, with blood, gore, violence, mature content, or sports games. Almost no games will be available for a younger person like your daughter until atleast next year, or never.
The games for the PS2 and PS1 work for the PS3.
If I wanted a PS3, my parents would not buy one for me becuase of its high price and generally high game ratings.
For a younger child like that, I suggest the Nintendo Wii, which has games for hardcore and casual gamers alike. The Wii comes out on 11-19-06, for around 250 dollars. For more info, go here: http://wii.nintendo.com/.
I would also not buy a PS3 because you will not be able to get one. Sony is only making 200,000 for the launch, and around 150,000 of those have already been pre-ordered. You can try EBay, buy don't expect a price under 1000 dollars until at least after Christmas.
As a conclusion, I suggest buying a Wii or no system at all.

There are certainly 3 distinctive systems.... the 40, 60 and 80GB's..... all of them can examine flash drives, and that i'm not sure what SACD is..... however the 40 is the main ordinary, through fact it has all the constructive aspects of the 80 only smaller value and GB needless to say.... however the 60 is the only one that is PS2 interest well suited and is likewise the toughest to discover.... besides the certainty that, you are able to bypass on line from the PS3 shop and procure the fairly some PS2 video games for the PS3 40 or 80 GB's..... stable success!!

The playstation three is just better. Better graphics, a hard drive, etc, and the PS3 is backwards compatible.
But why in the world would you buy one for an eight year old? Most games for the playstation are teen and above...

I have a hold on one for my old man and his sister. Its alot like xbox360. They access the internet you can play with anyone over the web. Its much like a computer. You can even chat. Music downloads ect. You should be able to use the ps2 games thats what Ive heard. My mother is also buying my nephew one. They cost a fortune. But thats the gift they want. It also takes blue ray discs. WHich is like a mini dvd. it can do tons of things. Like i said much like the xbox360 just a little more advance.

PS3 is like PS2, just about 30 times more powerful. Your daughter will be able to play games that look and play verrrry similar to real life. PS2 games will probably work on PS3.
