Both are great rivalries but I think a lot of people are overlooking the Iron Bowl. I'm not a fan of any of these teams(I'm a Georgia Tech fan) But after living in the North and the South I have to say that the Iron Bowl game seems to mean a lot more to its respective fan base. Michigan and Ohio State has great history and tradition. Alabama vs. Auburn has hate and personal pride. The series was suspended for 41 years because of an argument over per diems and locations until they were forced by the state legislature to resume the game. They literally buried a hatchet to symbolize the renewed rivalry and it's been a battle ever since. What mainly separates this game from the OSU vs. UM game is that there are no outside distractions and attention is focused solely on the Iron Bowl throughout the entire year. Having no real history of pro sports or major pro franchises, or even other major DI schools in the state the focus has been solely on the Iron Bowl. Any time you go to Alabama you can hear someone talking about this game it doesn't matter if it's 2 days before the game or 10 months until the game they'll be talking about. It consumes the state year round and while OSU UM has its own moments of heat and passion but it's not the all-consuming year round hatred that surrounds the Iron Bowl. Most of the Buckeye fans and Wolverine fans I know are great and passionate fans but all the energy they spend focusing on the Detroit Lions and Tigers, the Bengals, Reds etc is reserved in the state of Alabama purely for the Iron Bowl game. It divides houses and defines who you are in Alabama. And yes ESPN did vote OSU vs. UM the greatest rivalry, but then they came right back and voted the Iron Bowl the best rivalry the year after that. It's all subjective. People will be homers and pick the rivalry involving their team or their geographic area. With that said both rivalries are fantastic and should be enjoyed by their fan bases. But don't overlook the Iron Bowl. If you want a game where your pride and manhood is on the line for the next 12 months you don't have to look any further than the meeting of the Tide and Tigers every November.

Easily Michigan - Ohio State .
No game in the history of college football, or all of sport for that matter, has had more impact on its participant's conference or overall league/national standings as the UM - OSU game.

In response to K C's answer, go ask John Cooper if coaches get fired after losing this one. 1995 and 1996 OSU was ranked # 2, undefeated and heavily favored, and lost to Michigan.
After going 2-10-1 against Michigan, he was fired.

This year, before the season started, Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr was under tremendous media scrutiny about last year (7-5) and his 1-4 record against the Jim Tressle coached Buckeye's (6-5 overall against OSU).

The only time you hear about "The Iron Bowl" (?) is when one of the teams is ranked in the top 5 or 10.

You will hear about the Michigan - Ohio State game, even if both teams are not even nationally ranked.

Because both teams are so good this year most responses will say Michigan vs. OSU. But over time it has to be Alabama vs. Auburn. Coaches have been fired after back to back 10-1 seasons, but because they lost the Iron Bowl they were let go. THAT is a hated rivalry.

Without question it's Ohio State-Michigan. Even ESPN voted it #1 biggest rivalry and I can assure you, there's real hate there. It's such a huge deal that ex-coach John Cooper was fired because he couldn't beat Carr. He treated the Michigan game like any other game, which it is not. I love Tressel because he get's it. Fear the Vest.
Muck Fichigan.
