-Keep a note for few weeks during an episode of IBS to find out any possible contributory factors and try to avoid those things.
-Exercise regularly for 20-30 minutes a day to help reduce stress and regulate the bowels.

Big help is pay attention and journal your symptoms by your diet, stress level, and activities of that day. Finding out your triggers helps a lot. Likely some of it is food and some is stress.
Things that have an antispasmodic property like peppermint, chamomile, Fennel.
After that you start gettin specific with the symptoms.

the main component of IBS is an overgrowth of candida albanicus --"yeast", also a major factor in Crohn's Syndrome. It comes from a body being too acidic. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables , no dairy and no meat for a couple weeks (fish is ok a few times a week). You will notice a big change in this and your general well being.
We are not cows we have nothing to gain from eating dairy products and we dont need to eat as much meat as most americans do. Remember complete proteins are the way to go (rice and beans for instance, squash and beans, etc.).

Don't eat or drink anything that contains High Fructose Corn Syrup--that alone could end your IBS. Also eat more fresh fruits and veges and reduce the amount of meat & baked goods. Avoid any "foods" that don't occur naturally in nature.

Hi There
#3 is the most important point to start the healing quickly.
Causes
IBS can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor diet and nutrition, food allergies, imbalanced levels of hydrochloric acid, impaired immunity, infections, lack of exercise, pharmaceutical drugs, and stress.
Quick Action Plan for IBS
1. Avoid all sugars, refined flour products, and carbohydrates, milk and dairy products, processed foods that contain preservatives and artificial sweeteners, alcohol, hydrogenated and trans-fatty oils, as well as foods that are common allergens.
2. Emphasize organic, fresh vegetables and non-citrus fruits, organic grains, as well as organic, free-range meats and poultry and wild-caught fish.
3. Drink plenty of pure, filtered water throughout the day.
Cleansing and Detoxification therapy such as short fasts, elimination diets, and colonics.
4. Enteric-coated peppermint oil and aloe vera juice.
5. Soothing baths two to five nights a week, as well as alternating hot and cold water packs placed over the abdomen.
6. Use Probiotics and soil-based organisms.
7. Therapeutic juices include wheatgrass juice; cabbage, papaya, and carrot juice.
8. Stress reduction techniques, such as biofeedback, hypnosis, and meditation.
9. If you are a smoker, stop and refrain from taking aspirin or other NSAIDs.
10. Examine the possibility of withheld emotions as the cause of your symptoms and get support through emotional and physical expression, especially movement therapies such as NIA, Qi gong, Yoga or Total Integration Therapy to name a few options.
Best of health to you
Cheers

according to most schools of thought at least according to my experience seems to be an increase in roughage and this pro-biotic yogurt stuff. the idea being that if you have enough of the good guys in your tum it basically starves the bad guys to death.
IBS is very painful and can be very embarrassing, so i sympathize. I didn't believe the options i gave you would work for me but they did, for a time however it got worse. As my digestive tract settled so did my bowel and i rarely suffer anymore.
