I have a severe fear of throwing up and getting stomach flues. If someone in my family even says they have a bad stomach ache, then I start shaking and avoid them like crazy because it makes me so afriad. I hate living with this. I've researched this and it's called emetiphobia I think, and I've tried tharipists but it didn't help at all. I feel so alone! Does anybody else share this fear? Does anybody have a way to overcome this?

I think I've always had this fear to a certain point, but it got alot worse when I got this stomach flue when I was nine, where I threw up eleven times with extremly painful dry heaves. Now I'm fifteen, I havn't thrown up since, but I still remember the pain. I also have OCD, which does add to the anxiety of the fear.

It's amazing that you would mention this because just before I saw your question, I was thinking of answering another question asking what my fears were, and throwing up is one of them. I decided not to answer that one, but upon finding yours, I just couldn't resist.

Yes, it's called emetophobia, and while it sounds like you have a slightly more severe case than I do, I think I can definitely offer you some assistance, however significant it might be. I, myself, have experienced both emetophobia and genuine stomach disorder. Matter of fact, I'm still in the midst of one now, going on a year of non-stop pain this December. But enough about me. To my knowledge, you have one of the following two problems: A certain brand of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in which you had a bad experience with vomiting and now you're afraid of it, or generalized anxiety disorder, which often results in Obsessive-compulsive Disorder, which often results in irrational phobias, such as, emetophobia. I happen to have the latter. What you need to do is seek help for whichever of the two problems you most likely have. First, do some research: are there other things in your life that could be caused by an anxiety disorder, like OCD? If so, go to a doctor for a diagnosis. If you do in fact have OCD, or Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, then continue to pursue treatment. I can only recommend what I have experienced with my problem, so if you do have OCD or some form of generalized anxiety disorder, I suggest a natural method of treatment known as "The Linden Method." Here's their website:

If that's your problem, I have no doubt it will help you. Good luck; I wish you the best.

BLEAH!!

Sorry.

I don't know how old are you, but I had that fear when I was a child. I am 34 years old and had completely overcame that fear.
I have had therapy as an adult and spoke about it.
In my house there used to be a maid and she was a picturesque person, so I as a child used to ask her for remedies (she claimed to be a witch) so she would tell me to grab a lime a keep it in my hands, I do not believe in stuff like that, but as a child I did have a lime sometimes, it's all suggestion...
You might want to get help, only because you cannot control this fear and trust me allowing a fear to get the best out of you is no healthy living.
Good luck.

Please take care of yourself...cuze is the most precious thing. This fears and stomach aches might have to do with your stress and maybe something has been scared you, that's why the stomach ache might be the reaction of that.
So instead worrying, try to calm.Sit in a room alone for 20 minutes per day and don't think about anything else. Just throw your fears out. You 'll see you will feel better.
Nothing worths to be scared. Just trust yourself. And remember ygod is with you.

good luck.

Thats OK I am in my 30s and I hate throwing up it is scary and gross but throwing up is good for you because it gets the poisins and the toxins out of your body that potentially harm and hurt the body. Just take it one day at a time and if you do have to throw up just say it will be for a tiny while and then go away it is OK to have fears you would not be human if you didnt.

Traditional therapy and counseling will not help as you have discovered. However hypnotherapy or the clinical practice of hypnosis can. With this type of therapy, most likely the cause of the problem can be discovered and most importantly, your subconscious mind can be instructed to forget the fear or diminish it to the point that it won't bother you.You should be able to find competent and experienced hypnotherapists in your Yellow Page directory.
