Right click on the taskbar, the menu that pops up should have lock Taskbar checked on it, since locked taskbar is the default setting. Click on Lock Taskbar to UNlock it. then put yer cursor over the edge of the taskbar and the black dual arrow up/down should be there now click and hold and expand the taskbar UP, you will see the Taskbar double in size and youll see the time, and under that the day and under that the date... now if you can live with the taskbar at that thickness, then right click on tasknar again and REcheck Lock taskbar and yer done.

There is a freeware taskbar clock enhancer which shows Day Month Year & Time without having to hover the mouse over the time. It even has it's own calendar if you click on the date in the taskbar. you can also customise the font & colour & it sits in the normal height task bar.
You can take a look at a screenshot ..it's called TcockEX..& download from

If you unlock the taskbar (if its locked) and drag it upwards so that it is 3 high (default is 1), then it displays the time, day and date.
Unfortunetly you cannot setup Windows XP to show the date (without hovering over it) when the task bar is only 1 high.
