make the total watts less than certain amount, normall 1800 will be fine, it can be 1 to 100 or more.

egads..the NEC which i believe canada has a similar code.. does not say how many lights you can have on a circuit.. what it says is how many AMPS can be allowed.. imagine having only 8 lights drawing 10 watts each(the new mini flourescents) a total of 80 watts (which is .7amps) on a 20 amp circuit! Now you know how silly the other answers are...for lights you must add up the total and not go over 80% in wattage.. thus a 20 amp circuit at 120 volts, max is 2400 watts....times 80% equals 1920 watts..
any single utilization device(refridge, washer etc) can only be up to 16 amps on any 20 amp circuit. As far as outlets go.. the code when building a house states that an outlet should be 180 watts each...thus (when building only), that 20 amp 120 volt circuit which has 2400 watts...can have per code, 13.33 outlets...
(take 2400 divide by 180 = 13.33) so again 8 is incorrect

darkgoth gave it to you straight. Code does not state amount. If you are using pretty standard ceiling lights (4 bulbs@ 60watts) you can put three or four rooms on one circuit. Keep the lights on a separate circuit from the receipts, that way if you are working on the light circuit, you can still plug a lamp in that room for light

12 combined lights or outlets per circuit is Ontario's code
8 would be better though.

not sure what Ontario's codes are, but rule of thumb is 8.
if they are standard lites and recpets and normal uses 8.
1.5 amps per bulb x 8 = 12amps and the circuit breaker is for 15amps...get the idea.
recpts are the same as normally, radios, etc and lites and lil' thing s are plugged into them and they draw a lil more, so recpts are 20amps get it.
ranges are 50amps
dryers are 30amps

15 amps, you can run up to 7 outlets on. But not in a kithen. Same goes for lighting.

8 to a circuit is correct where i live, but you should contact your local building inspectors to get the correct code.

Please remember 110 volts can kill, so switch off curcuit before messing with it, better still get someone whos qualified to do it.
