The day it starts, even if its just spotting, is your first day. To monitor ovulation, try taking your oral temp. every morning before you get out of bed. Your temp will usually increase when you ovulate.

I count the first site I see because I have a short cycle. But I have heard that you are suppose to count the first full day that you get. Good Luck
