How do you vibrato?

Question

cause i play the violin and cant seem to vibrato. my teacher even announced to the class the other day that we HAVE to know how to vibrato....so yeah...no comments like "wiggle your finger" cause that doesn't help.

The best way I saw a teacher teach it was to make the students grab a soup can and shake it back and forth with their wrist. That's pretty much the motion. You make vibrato by rapidly moving your wrist up and down, not by focusing on moving you finger. Your finger has to stay in pretty much the same spot.

It's not a matter of wiggling your finger, so much as a matter of moving your wrist. Rather than try to make the sound from your finger, make it from your hand/wrist. Watch anyone that does it, and you'll see their wrist making the vibrato, not their finger. It is hard to get figured out, I've had to myself.

well i play viola, and i know that violists vibrate with their entire arms to get a richer sound, but violinists have to vibrate with their wrists. just move your wrist towards you then away from you and make sure your finger doesn't move off the note. its takes a lot of practice but you will get it.

i play cello, but my teacher said that for violins:
you're basically waving to yourself. in a forwards backwards kinds motion? which is very difficult. because i tried that on my friends' violin.
