Vista demands plenty of RAM (only in idle mode it consumes aproximatelly 520 Mb). If you want to use other applications (Office, net surfing, playing games) then 1 Gb unfortuanetly won't be enough...
The single solution right now is to stop using Aero theme...

One of the biggest offenders - and this problem is usually triggered by certain software which is not yet compatible with the feature - is the suped-up Windows Indexing service implemented in Vista. For the moment, I've been disabling - better to wait until all your software is Vista certified.

Open the "run" console and enter "msconfig" - go to the services tab and scroll down to the bottom to locate "Windows Search" (should be about the third-last entry) - disable that and reboot.

You'll be amazed what a difference it makes.

Oh, the other thing which can make a big difference if making sure you have the most up-to-date Vista drivers for your graphics card - should be able to download this from the manufacturer's website

It depends what process is happening.
I have never used Vista so I cannot really help.
Make sure the CPU is not overclocking by checking your BIOS.
