Nothing except your letting dust get into the components which is a big no no. But it will work fine till the dust screws the components up
And with out the cover the cooling fan can't direct the flow of air where it needs to be.

Pappy is correct. Assuming you live in a house with no children or animals, that's the worst thing that can/will happen. Dust has absolutely nothing to do with it, since they don't sell pre-built computers with fan filters. That means that the dust will be "getting into" your computer, no matter what you do. As a matter of fact, the fans are forcing the dust inside of your case.

nothing. if anything it possibly cools it slightly better if in a cool place as it increases the amount of air circulation in the system. Although you can cause larger dust buildup within your unit alog with exposing your system to malicious damage by youngsters or even accidents.

It is not recommended to leave your cpc without a cover but some people still do it. These days there are much better alternatives to cooling your PC such as better designed boxes and better airflow management by the fans or even with things such as water cooling....

you are right. sometimes it does happen --specially when you lose the special screws -- to put back the cover. then you also want to check out whether the problem you tried to fix...has indeed been fixed and all is OK. by that time you are exhausted...and leave that damn thing open...for ever. it does happen and you do not care about dust, or cold or fan -- c'est la vie. do not worry until things go wrong again -- and at that time you will be happy you left it open so you can fix the problem faster. hope it helps.
