That must be a trick question, because you did not state whether it was the United States "of America" or the Estados Unidos de Mexico (United States of Mexico).

43 states technically. Seven states are called commonwealths, including Kentucky and Virginia. But really they're considered states. I'm surprized Puerto Rico is not one yet, but then we'd have an uneven number.

OHH!! i get it! its probably a trick question because in canada there ARE no states! there are only provences! So the answer would be 50.

OK it is 50 but if you are not counting the 1s that are not connected than you are talking abou 48!!!
