I think there are several approaches to this Q. Any law has to be sold to the masses and it also has to be appealing. Here are my selling points:
1) It has abundant medical uses and it is cheaper than current prescription choices
2) As a recreational drug it is less deadly and problematic than alcohol and/or cigarettes
3) It can be highly taxed bringing in a new source of gov income
4) People who profit from marijuana sales could be properly taxed for their income
5) Land degradation and pollution by illegal growers would be easier to prevent
6) Control of the substance and substance abuse would be easier to identify

And Now for the controversial argument.... Religious... God made all plants to be used by people as needed/desired.
Genesis 1:29-30
Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food."

A number of people have said 'with a prescription', but that's not true, exactly. Doctors are not allowed to prescribe pot. They can only 'recommend' it. There's a form you can download and get your doctor to sign, and then if you are carrying this form you can possess up to 8 ounces of pot. Pot is sold in some coffee houses that are also registered with the state. And there are private agencies issuing photo ID cards to help identify you as someone who has the right to buy pot. There's a neighborhood in Oakland called 'Oaksterdam' that has the places where pot is sold, also training in growing, etc. My GF has been through this process. She has cancer and is having chemotherapy (actually she's doing very well, thank God). She got the form signed, got an ID card, and has bought pot a few times. It's good pot too, and very reasonably priced. I think it really helps her. Pot is still illegal on the federal level, and once in a while the DEA comes in and closes down the coffee houses. But the state will not prosecute us. In fact many cities in California have decided not to waste police and court time on minor marijuana offenses.

If you are in the US, then federal law supersedes state law on drug related issues (Supreme Court decision). So, unless the federal law changes, you cannot legally obtain marijuana here. One exception - Rastafarians claim it is an essential component of their religion, and since religions are protected by the constitution, they can use it when related to religious observance.

Medical marijuana bills are ineffective in any state, since federal laws take precedence.

If you live in the Netherlands, sale of Marijuana is legal and you can purchase it in many coffee shops.

If you live in England, possession of quantities for personal use has been 'decriminalized' - that is, the police do not prosecute for possession; however, possession with intent to sell is still a crime.

For laws in other countries, consult local law.

Organize a grass roots campaign, raise money, lobby for it, run TV commercials for it, try to convince the public that criminalizing marijuana is hurtful, try to get candidates elected who would support the legalization.
Good luck!

First, convince everyone who uses it to stop calling it marijuana and pot, those are bigoted and ignorant words used by people who want to keep it illegal, then convince everyone who uses it to come out of the woodwork's and protest against it's prohibition.. But above all, convince people to stop parrotting what their corrupt government has been saying all these years and read.

It is legal in other countries... for medical reasons. I agree it should be legalized. It is better then some of the legal pain meds that are out there now....and not as harmful...This is my own opinion....

you need to talk to your local polititions. you may not get far though, having it as a recreational drug is not a popular idea but you can talk about how it helps with memory and alhymerz(sp) ADD & ADHD types, and that its actually less hazerdous then alcohol. It depends who you can get in the political side and a partitsion(sp) could help
