football players only have 4 tries to get the ball past a certain yard marking. each of these 4 tries is called a down. if they don't make it to the mark on the first try, then they have a 2nd down (they might call it "2nd and 10", meaning it's the 2nd down and they have 10 yards to go before they reach the next mark). if they don't make it on the 2nd down, then they go to a 3rd down, etc. if it gets to a 4th down and they still don't make it to the mark, then the ball goes to the other team's possession.

In plain english The players start of at a certian point on the field ( the line of scrimage) now say this point is the 40 yard line. They have 4 tries or downs to make it ten yards or to the 50 yard line in this example. So lets say the first try they make it 4 yards the next try it will be second down and 6 yards to go or more commonly put 2nd and 6. And this goes on untill the 4th down and then they have to give the ball to the other team if they dont get their 10 yards. Penalties are so broad, its just whatever you not aloud to do on the feild.

The goal of football is for one team (on the offense) to bring the ball to the end zone; the goal of the defense being to stop them. The Offense has 4 chances to get to ten yards further then their current position. If they get to ten yards before they use their four chances, then they get a first down and they have a fresh patch of 4 chances... (i. e.: if the announcer says its " 2 and 8 " that means that it's their 2nd try and that they need to gain 8 yards in order to get the first down).
Now a penalty is something that can happen on both sides of the ball ( offence and defense ). A penalty is basically something that you're not alowed to do. If a player does something he isn't allowed to do then his opponents are presented with a choice. Most penalty on the offence, make them lose yards (i. e.: let's say they're at "2nd and 8" and they get a penalty, then they could go back to "2nd and 18"). A penalty on the defense can result in the opposite; a gain for the offence. For example, if a player of the defense hits a player of the offense before the ball is in play then the offence could move up five yards ( "2nd and 8" to "2nd and 3")

There are 4 downs .A team has to get 10 yards to get a first down. They have 4 downs to accomplish this.If they reach the 10 yard marker, they get another 1st down. They will continue this until they reach the endzone and score a touchdown.A penalty is an action that a player has committed on the field that is against the rules.

lol 1st off, you get 4downs to make 10 yards, if you get 10 yards the chains move and you get another 4downs to make 10 more yards, if you dont make the 10 yards you turn the ball over, which is why most teams punt on 4th down if they dont get the 10 yards on the 3rd down, there are several penaltys, facemask, offsides, falsestart, passing interference, roughing the quaterback, and many more, just watch a game and you will pick it up, may i recomend the Michigan Ohio St. game saturday at 330/ Go big blue
