take an Advil or a Midol(<--meant for that time of the month), take a long warm bath, drink a hot tea to sooth the cramps, take a nap.
STAY away from salty foods like pretzels and chips. all of the salt will make you retain water, and you feel bloated and huge.
drink LOTS of water though.

I use Ibuprofen. They say 400 mg on the package, but no doctor ever prescribed less than 800 mg for me, so I take double the OTC dose. Do NOT take more than 800 mg! Also, make sure you take it with food or milk. Ibuprofen is hard on the stomach and can cause ulcers and other gastric problems if taken on an empty stomach.
If you get cramps, believe it or not, sit ups help. Of course, we don't feel like exercising when we have cramps. LOL Don't try to exercise hard. Just do sit-ups at whatever level is easy for you. Don't strain. 5 or 10 will help. It relaxes the uterine muscle tissue and helps to stop the contractions that we call cramps.
Menstrual cramps are like the contraction of heart muscle in a heart attack. It's not imagination, but a real thing and it can really hurt. Some people do not get them and don't get what the big deal is. It's a big deal if you are the one suffering from it.
So be good to yourself.
Best Wishes,
Sue

As a heating pad might feel good, it dilates your blood vessels & gives you a heavier flow, which will in turn give you worse cramps. I take Diurex - it's a water/diet pill so you have to be at least 18 to buy it in most stores, however, just taking 1 of these in the morning and maybe some Ibuprophin later on usually always helps me because it gets rid of the bloating (which is why I usually cramp). Also try to stay away from salty food because it just makes you retain even more water.

You could take a hot bath or cuddle up to a hot water bottle. A little exercise might help - but that's probably the last thing you feel like doing now! Or some chocolate might make you feel better!!

Light exercise, sleep, rest at home, more sitting or squatting, less standing. And if all else fails, Ibuprofen or Tylenol.
