Something small would be nice, just to show a token of your affection. I'm a college student and have been with my boyfriend for 4 years; I usually get his parents a small gift card to one of their favorite restaurants.

Well, Yes; even if you are not totally sure how the relationship is going, it would still be a lovely, wonderful gesture.
There is nothing like leaving a bit of niceness, love, generosity and good will, wherever you go in life.
It's amazing what it attracts in turn, besides how happy and good you feel, as well.

Ask him- but maybe only if you are really close to the family; maybe get his gifts for them together, so they are from both of you; that makes it easier; cause then they know that you both picked 'em out and it's not just from you. also, chances are that this year they'll get you a little something,' cause you're still with him...and they're asking "is this it? are they or arn't they?Maybe they'll announce it..." Good luck!

if it's serious you should think about asking him if you can go in on a gift together. I dont' think you need to have a gift solely from you at this point. but maybe move towards unifying your relationship by giving joint gifts.

If you're going to go to visit them it would be nice to take something with you. like cake, chocolates, flowers, etc. Something general that you would take to anyone's house should you visit.

Why not . You'll be appreciated by the family for being thoughtful and the more they will vote for you as a future in-law.
