Welp, there is just not enough room to start this answer.

First, learn all you can about the history of guitars- acoustic and electric. Consider differing points of view when it comes to everything. Don't just agree with the first thing that comes across youe eyes or ears. Read as many books as you can about guitar construction. Build a guitar from scratch if you can.

Then, you will need to have a firm understanding of electronics, wood, metals, and assembly techniques. Throw in a heavy dose of trigonometry and geometry. This will get you started on the theory and will definitely put you in the "freak" category (it worked for me).

Once you have achieved this, you can sit by the fireside with your other freak friends, guitar in hand, and discuss the ramifications of utilizing different headstock angles or varying the alloy of fretwire or the sonic implications of using flat slotted screws instead of phillips head to hold down pickguards.

But, don't get too close to the fire, it will change the moisture content in the wood and change the sound!

Les Paul is very good at playing one. As a matter of fact he invented the electric guitar. He is still alive and playing at a club in New Jersey.
