Depends on what you think succeeding in life is, if happiness is included in the definition, then yes i think you need friends. Friends give you something to fall back on and real friends are always there when you need them. I love my friends.

Yes, I think you need the support, encouragement and so on to make it in life. With no friends you are sitting in your apartment or house with no phone, don't need a phone if you have no friends. Don't need an email or anythign else. You go straight to work or school or both and come home.. If thats not depressing what is!?

Yes. Well I mean it depends on the kind of success you're talking about. For professional success maybe not (but then again...). For success in life in general to me it means being happy and I cannot see how I would do that without friends.

No, I don't need friends. My success is based on my client's opinion of my artwork, and my artwork is inspired by natural surroundings and personal moods.
