When a player is redshirted it's not only because the won't get any playing time. They can also be redshirted for academic reasons, injuries, or other circumstances which may require NCAA approval.
I looked for the history of the term, but all I found was Star Trek refferences. Howover, I know for a fact that they are not forced to wear red shirts.

You can only play 4 years of college sports. Redshirting someone would mean they don't lose a year of playing when the sit the bench the whole year. When you get redshirted you can practice with the team you just can't play the games.
For Example
If I was a freshman and you where a senior and we played football qb they would redshirt me because I would never play.

Redshirt freshman are in their first year of eligibility, but it's their 2nd year on the team. A lot of freshman sit out from official play their first year to gain experience and make the most of their eligibility. When a player is redshirted, they do everything with the team except play in the games. They have to sit out from play the entire year; they can't even play one down. A freshman that actually plays their very first year of college ball is called a "true freshman".
The word probably came from the players wearing red shirts so the coaches knew who they couldn't use. [I meant many years ago they probably did this, because if a freshman plays just one single down, they've become eligible that year, so it's probably beneficial to be able to identify who not to put in the game, because redshirt freshman are fully suited for the games in case of emergency.]
"5th year senior" indicates a player who red-shirted their first year, then played the next four years, making them a senior in their 5th year of school.
