The Kinsey Reports of 1948 and 1953 stated 37% of males and 13% of females had homosexual experiences, but this includes incidental homosexual experience. The study reported 10% of males being more or less exclusively homosexual and 2% to 6% of females being more or less exclusively homosexual.
A 1990 study (Homosexuality/Heterosexuality by McWhirter, Sanders, and Reinisch) stated 13.95% of males and 4.25% of females had "extensive" or "more than incidental" homosexual experience.
A 1993 study (The Janus Report on Sexual Behavior) found 9% of men and 5% of women were involved in frequent or ongoing homosexual experiences, but only 4% of men and 2% of women called themselves homosexual. This difference can be attributed as those who were 'out' and those who were 'closeted'.
It appears that the number of male homosexuals is approximately 10% and the number of female homosexuals is approximately 4%. It also appears that only half of those who are truly homosexual are "out".

My planned parenting text says 10 - 13 %... which means roughly 10 to 13 people out of every 100.
Personally, I think the number is higher... so many people are in hiding, because this world can be a really cruel place.

Read chris24's answer and also I must add that researchers arbitrarily count who is gay and who is not based on behavior. One study only counted a man as gay if he had sex only with men for 5 years. Obviously that will screw up the numbers.
The truest answer is no one knows. It all depends on the methodology used to define people. And then you have to account for all the liars out there.

10 % (conservative estimate) of the worlds population are gay, so take americas population and figure 10%...... don't ask me specifics, numbers are NOT my forte. lololol
