Get yourself a carrying caddy for the showers. You can put all of your toiletries in there for a quick run to the showers.
Get some shower shoes and a bath robe as well.
Stock up on snacks. If your family has a vaccum packer, seal those bad boys up.
Don't bring a ton of clothes. Shorts and tee's with flip flops are what you'll be wearing 95% of the time.
Don't waste money on condoms!!! The RA's give them away for free, and the health center will have them (if you need specific brands) for about 1/5 of the cost. When I lived in Austin I kept buying them at the health center instead of Wal Mart for that reason...even after I graduated!! ^_^
That $1000.00 HAS to be BEFORE the lap top.

dorm?
quick, before it's too late. get an apartment!
I've driven through SFA. What a wonderful place that would be to go to school.
but... find out how you get out of the dorm and do it. whatever it takes. best? get a couple of guys and rent a house!
there are very few idiot sophomores at any college, but the dorm at ALL colleges is FILLED with the dumbest freshman the world has ever seen. Even at the "finest" colleges, 60% of the students are there on borrowed money and should really be at the junior college somewhere. Do whatever you have to do. Rent a house. or at least get an apartment. and get as FAR away from the school as you can where you and your roommates are the only students the locals have ever seen. You do NOT want to be in "student housing" of any kind, anywhere, on campus or off. Especially if you are a good student. If you're one of these guys with his baseball cap on sideways (or even own a baseball cap), you haven't got a chance anyway so it wouldn't matter. good luck, have fun and watch those pine needles!

I was a resident advisor in an 11-floor high rise at Montana State last year. I lived in the dorms two years before moving into my apartment. The most common things I had (and my residents had) were a laptop or desktop (of course), a TV, mini-fridge, microwave, and electric tea pot. Shower flip-flops and a caddy are must, a laundry basket, extension cords with extra outlets, if you are planning on building a loft or bunk bed I would bring your own drill so you don't have to wait to rent one, and besides that you should just see what kind of stuff you need and what you have room for. A lot of things you can buy once you get settled in, especially if you have to haul stuff a long way. You might want to check with your roommate when they assign you one to see what they are bringing. There's no sense in having two of everything.

This link has a nice, comprehensive list:
http://www.collegesofdistinction.com/subpagetemplates/articlepage.asp?articleid=18
It's a good idea to start thinking about - and saving for! - dorm room essentials now. According to published reports the typical freshman spends just over $1,000 by the time they buy a laptop, garbage pail, and all the other things.
One piece of advice to keep costs under control: You don't really need to buy everything new. In fact, in some cases, it's smart to just take stuff you already have at home. Fancy new bedspreads get stuff spilled on them, elegant new towels get lost easily. So, as you look through the list, think about which things you could probably find by "shopping at home."
Enjoy your first year!
