I absolutely adore Regina Spektor. I think Gym Class Heroes are very innovative. I know it's been done, the rap meets punk thing, but they do it better than I've seen.

I think Mike Patton (ex-Faith No More) is one of the most original and innovative singers I've ever heard. His voice changes sound from song to song. Usually you can pick a (known) singer as soon as you hear their voice. Not Patton. His side projects have always been interesting, too. Peeping Tom, his latest project, is the closest sounding thing to FNM he's ever done.

innovative, eh?
something that hasnt been done before? That has NOT copied from anyone? Doesnt exist. However, the band Kings X had a sound that no one ever had...
Also, the folkish Joanna Newsom is definitely strange and unique.

OK I know I'm going to get a reaction to this but I think Will Young is very innovative with his music. Although he has a huge fan base I don't think he gets the full recognition he deserves.

but the number one is definitely Beck. there's a reason he's been able to stay around so long without getting washed out or annoying. because he's genius.

At the moment, I'd go for Patrick Wolf since he really has a distinct sound. He has this electronic sound which has a folk element, so it's not synthpop. There is a pop element to it as well, and he doesn't confine himself to a sound.

They are pretty innovative, but, even though I don't particularly like them, The Dixie Chicks are pretty innovative.
