I would suggest she name the child Valerie, or Valentino for a boy. I have always hated my name b/c is the short version of a real name. Let the child have the choice for later on in life. She can always call them Val while, their a child.

As for being old ladyish I dont think so.....Now I see Esther, Ethel, and Estellea, as old lady names.

Dear Honey Bee,
NO! I do not think that "Val" sounds like an old lady's name. It just sounds a little mature. Maybe "Val" can be a nickname, and you could suggest that your aunt name her baby "Valeri."

No, but I think it's strange just to name the child Val...every Val I've known has been a Valerie.

She shouldn't name a baby Val, but make clear, whether she means (if it's a girl) Valeria or Valentina or Valencia or something else, or Valentino for a boy. Later she can still call the child by the abbreviation of the full name.
Especially Valeria I don't think to be oldladish, not at all !

Please remember that your aunt will be the mother, it's her business to choose a name.

Its not outlandish...mu cousin is named Valerie and people call her Val all the time, so I don't it'd be odd to simply name a girl just Val.

There was this movie called "brink" on the disney channel back in the day and there was a boy named "Val". I think it's good for a boy but not a girl.

Val is short for Valerie. That is one of my teachers names and she goes by the short version: Val.
She is old, about 65. And it sounds old to me.

I like Valerie Ok though or Autumn, April, Jewel, Ruby, and Faith
